CHARLESTON, SC — Republican candidate Mike Burkhold today released the following statement after no other Republican filed for South Carolina Comptroller General, securing the party’s nomination for the November general election:

“I am honored to accept the Republican nomination for Comptroller General.

This race has never been about politics for me. It is about fixing a system that is not working the way it should. When South Carolina cannot account for billions of dollars, when citizens cannot clearly see where their money is going, and when basic financial controls fall short, it is time for change.

The Comptroller General’s office should be the most disciplined and transparent financial operation in state government. It should provide clear, accurate information to lawmakers and full visibility to the people of South Carolina. Right now, it does not meet that standard. That is what I intend to fix.

This office requires conservative principles. Discipline. Accountability. Respect for the taxpayer. In the private sector, every dollar is tracked, every system is measured, and every leader is responsible for results. That same mindset should apply to government. The idea that we can manage a $40 billion budget without real transparency and control is simply unacceptable.

My opponents in November will offer a different vision. More government, less accountability, and a continuation of the systems that led us here. I believe South Carolina deserves better. We need a financial watchdog, not a passive administrator. We need leadership that is willing to modernize systems, strengthen controls, and make every dollar visible.

This is not about holding a seat. It is about restoring trust. It is about building a finance function that works for the people, gives lawmakers clarity, and creates the foundation for a stronger, more disciplined state.

I look forward to taking this message to voters across South Carolina. Together, we can fix the place where the money flows and set a new standard for accountability in our state.”
